July 2017 We will present a conference paper on “Neural Style Transfer: A Paradigm Shift for Image-based Artistic Rendering?” at the joint Expressive Symposium (CAe, NPAR, SBIM).

We presented two conference papers at CHI this year, one on “Mouse, Tactile, and Tangible Input for 3D Manipulation” and one on “Pressure-Based Gain Factor Control for Mobile 3D Interaction using Locally-Coupled Devices”. The latter paper received a Best Paper Honorable Mention award.

December 2016 My book chapter on “Interactive Exploration of 3D Scientific Visualizations on Large Display Surfaces” was published in the Springer book “Collaboration Meets Interactive Surfaces and Spaces: Theory and Practice”.
October 2016 At IEEE VIS 2016, we presented two papers: one on the “Hybrid Tactile/Tangible Interaction for 3D Data Exploration” and another one entitled “Visualization as Seen Through its Research Paper Keywords”.
October 2016 We also presented a poster at IEEE VIS 2016 on “Tangible Brush: Performing 3D Selection with Portable and Position-aware Devices”.
October 2016 Finally, I again co-organized the BELIV symposium on “Beyond Time And Errors: Novel Evaluation Methods For Visualization”, to be co-located with IEEE VIS 2016.
September 2016 Our journal article entitled “vispubdata.org: A Metadata Collection about IEEE Visualization (VIS) Publications” was accepted to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics.
June 2016 We presented the state of the art report (STAR)A survey on Perceptually Motivated 3D Visualization of Medical Image Data” at EuroVis 2016, which was also published as a journal article in the Computer Graphics Forum.
May 2016 I presented a meta paper on “Interactive NPAR: What type of tools should we create?” at Expressive 2016.
May 2016 Our journal article entitled “Towards an Understanding of Mobile Touch Navigation in a Stereoscopic Viewing Environment for 3D Data Exploration” was published in IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics.

November 2015 I co-organized DEXIS 2015, a workshop on Visual Data Exploration on Interactive Surfaces at the ACM Conference on Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces.
November 2015 At SIGGRAPH Asia 2015, we were invited to repeat the presentation of our IEEE VIS 2015 paper on the “CAST: Effective and Efficient User Interaction for Context-Aware Selection in 3D Particle Clouds” in the invited TVCG session on visualization.
October 2015 At IEEE VIS 2015, we presented two papers: one on the “CAST: Effective and Efficient User Interaction for Context-Aware Selection in 3D Particle Clouds” and another one entitled “Occlusion-free Blood Flow Animation with Wall Thickness Visualization”.

July 2013 I presented a talk at the ACM/EG Expressive conference on our work on “Interactive Example-based Hatching”. I also presented a poster on “Illustrative Data Graphic Style Elements” as well as two Visual Showcase pieces—one each about the talk and the poster.

March 2013 Our visualization viewpoints article on “Data Visualization on Interactive Surfaces: A Research Agenda” has appeared in the journal IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications.
March 2013 My first “own” PhD student Moritz Gerl has successfully defended his thesis on March 15. Congratulations Moritz!

January 2013 A new book about non-photorealistic stylization has been published by Springer with two chapters that I wrote or co-authored: a chapter on the evaluation of NPR by myself and a chapter on stippling by Oliver Deussen and myself. Check them out!

Our paper on “Efficient Structure-Aware Selection Techniques for 3D Point Cloud Visualizations with 2DOF Input” received an Best Paper Honorable Mention Award at the IEEE Scientific Visualization conference (VisWeek 2012).

October 2012 The VisWeek 2012 submissions were quite successful: we presented the papers “Efficient Structure-Aware Selection Techniques for 3D Point Cloud Visualizations with 2DOF Input,” “Sketchy Rendering for Information Visualization,” and “Evaluating Sketchiness as a Visual Variable for the Depiction of Qualitative Uncertainty” in Seattle.

August 2012 Together with Paul Asente, John Collomosse, and T. Metin Sezgin, I was the guest editor of a special section on CAe, NPAR, and SBIM of the journal Computers & Graphics which has now been published.
